Miniature Dogs For Kids

Although big, working dogs are helpful in guarding the house, and protecting the family members, it is sometimes harmful with children around. Even if these dogs just mean to be playful, their heavy weight and big built may prove dangerous to kids.

With kids around, miniature dogs are more preferable. Such dogs can even stay inside the house, instead of putting them in cages in the garden. Miniature dogs are the most adorable types of dogs. They have unique personalities that big working dogs cannot pull off. However, these miniature dogs are more delicate and need extra care.

There are two major health problems for the small dogs: dehydration and hypoglycemia. They are prone to these sicknesses because mainly because of their lighter weights and petite size. Just like ordinary dogs, miniature dogs also need to be vaccinated. When you have a puppy, it is your obligation to take them on regular trips to the veterinarian for initial examination and regular checkups. The veterinarian diagnoses the dog before recommending what vaccine to give.

If a puppy has contact with other animals, it will be given a 5-way vaccine. If it is exposed to other animals, it will be given a 7-way vaccine. If your place has Canine Coronavirus problem, it will be given either of the two vaccines. If your area has ticks, your dog needs lyme vaccine. And if you are planning to travel with your dog, bordetella Vaccine is given. This vaccine is against tracheobronchitis or kennel cough.

Miniature dogs are great companions of kids. They both love to play, and the dogs would love to be cuddled. It is also an excellent opportunity to give kids responsibility and take care of the dog themselves. Not all dogs are suitable to kids. Be careful to choose the right one for them, neither too big nor small, and never vicious. Also consider the health concerns of children. Some may be allergic to dog furs or dog food.

There are dogs that prefer to go outdoors; there are also those who want to be in the presence of the family. You need to decide which dog fits your family. If you would choose a puppy, you must have time to train them how to mingle with the whole family. As much as possible, acquaint it to every member of the family. The dog should sense who is family and who is not. There is a big variety of dog breeds. Each breed has varied characteristics and innate personality. Pugs, Yorkshire terrier, toy poodles and Pekingese can be best for kids or teenagers.

With dogs as their pets, kids can find someone to share everything they want to share with. They would not be so keen anymore in going out. They would rather stay home to be with their dog. They would not be disturbing their parents when they are busy because their attention would be on their pets. They would then learn how to care for their pets, and teach them how to be responsible. These are good traits that can be imbibed in them and nurture their growth. Dogs make families happy. After a tiring day in school, kids look for their dogs at home to relax and unwind a bit.

Where space is really tight and children need to have a portion of a room, two mid sleeper beds with desks and work areas beneath are a more practical choice than bunk beds. The flexibility high sleeper beds offer in kids' room is something that cannot be neglected. Even if you can ignore your child's pleas for one of these innovational kids' beds!

Montessori Schools for ADHD Kids

For most children with ADHD, the traditional school system cannot address their needs or unique learning styles. The typical classroom requires children to stay still and listen to the teacher's lecture, but kids with ADHD have trouble focusing on the discussion unless it is one that interests them. They also have difficulty containing themselves, and may disrupt class by blurting out answers or being unable to remain in their seats. Although some teachers do not mind making concessions to ADHD kids, your child might have better performance in a school with a completely different approach to teaching.

Consider placing your child in a Montessori school. The Montessori method was developed by an Italian medical doctor named Maria Montessori, who made the observation that children can teach themselves from the things in their environment. Unlike the traditional classroom, children engage all their five senses instead of just listening, reading, and watching. They can learn at their own pace and choose the activities that interest them. Some parents worry that this lack of structure might only worsen the symptoms of ADHD, but this is a common misconception. Children in Montessori schools have to complete homework assignments and tests just like in traditional schools. The only difference is that students can take their time accomplishing their tasks, and teachers can use different methods to teach them new concepts and stimulate their interest. Studies also show that graduates of Montessori schools have no problems adjusting to college life or entering the workforce.

One other advantage of a Montessori school is the small student-to-teacher ratio. The typical Montessori classroom has only fifteen students to one teacher. This allows the teacher to pay more attention to individual children, keep track of their progress, and help them with problem areas. The small class size is also more conducive to fostering long-term friendships and social skills.

Although Montessori schools can foster a love of learning for children with ADHD, it seems that this less-structured approach can benefit only those who already have some control over their symptoms. Montessori students are taught to be independent and choose a task with little instruction or direction. Children who have not yet learned to manage their ADHD might well end up jumping from one activity to the next, unable to concentrate due to the wide variety of options and new stimuli. But if you think your child might be suited to the Montessori school system, consider picking up brochures from nearby schools and asking questions about their experience with ADHD children.

Fun and Easy Art Projects for Kids

Most children simply love to create art projects. Drawing, painting, and making crafts tend to be fun activities for children and wonderful methods to practice small motor skills and coordination. One added advantage is the fact that once your child learns to love art from a young age it becomes an appreciation that can be carried throughout the remainder of their life. If you'd like to help your child exercise his or her creative skills whilst enjoying a great time, here's two fun and easy art projects to try.

Art Utilizing the Hand

If you want a craft project that's fun, fast and inexpensive, it's hard to beat hand art. All you need is a pad of paper, a box of crayons, and your child's hand. The first thing to do is to take a crayon and trace around your own hand onto a piece of paper. Then, use your creativity to transform your hand tracing into something entirely different. Although most people have traced their hand and transformed it into a turkey during the Thanksgiving season as a child, there are plenty of other creative and fun things you can do. One example would be to draw a face within the palm portion and then make the fingers into a spiked hairdo. You might like to turn your paper upside-down after making the hand tracing. The fingers might become a space monsters legs or even an insect. This can be a creative and cheap way for you to spend an afternoon. Make sure that you take a couple of the child's favorite hand tracing pictures and display them in picture frames.

Paper Towel "Tie Dye" Project

Your youngster can create numerous pieces of dyed artwork through the use of some plain white paper towels, water, some rubber bands or twist-ties, paper clips, a few small bowls, plus some watercolor paints. Start by placing a vinyl tablecloth or plastic drop cloth over the table to protect the surface. Fold a plain white paper towel in a fan-fold fashion. Then, use the rubber bands, twisty-ties or paper clips to restrict the folds in a few areas. Pour a small amount of water in each bowl. Add a different color of watercolor paint to every bowl while using the brush. Dip different parts of the folded paper towel into every color. The paper towel absorbs the colored paints, and the locations that have the paper clips, rubber bands, and twist ties will remain white. When you have added enough different colors, blot the folded towel gently with clean paper towels to remove excess moisture. Then, take off the rubber bands, twisty-ties and paper clips to disclose the tie dye thing of beauty. Lay your beautiful creation flat to dry. You can also cover the painted paper towel using a clean paper towel and iron it to eliminate the folds. This beautifully colored tie dye art looks nice when displayed in picture frames, adding plenty of color and design to your room.

With some new ideas to try, have some fun getting your child going on an excellent project. Be sure to frame the end product so that it can be proudly displayed!

Three Great Recycling Projects For Kids

If you want to teach your kids the value of recycling, it would help a lot if you give them some hands-on experience. Learning first-hand just how important recycling is and what they can do with materials that are considered by some as trash will give your kids a greater appreciation for recycling.

A few simple crafts can get your kids started on recycling. Here are some recycling projects for kids that your children may enjoy working on.

1. A letter holder from old CDs and packaging foam

One good recycling project for kids is making a letter holder from old data CDs and foam. Old data CDs are hard to dispose sometimes, and so is packaging foam.

To make a letter holder from these materials, you would need the following:

o Four old data CDs
o Packaging foam
o Scraps of decorative cloth, art paper or pages from a glossy magazine
o Glue
o Other decorative items like beads, silk flowers or glitter

To do this recycling project for kids, glue two CDs together to make them a pair. Decorate these CDs with your choice of decorative cloth, art paper or magazine pages, and then accentuate them with beads or flowers and other accessories.

The packaging foam serves as the base of the letter holder, so you can shape it any way you want and decorate it the way you did the CDs. Afterwards, cut panels into the foam where you could insert the CDs.

2. A bird feeder from milk cartons

This is another simple recycling project for kids that will also teach them to appreciate nature. This would work well if you live outside the city; you would have a greater chance of attracting birds.

All you need to do with this recycling project for kids is to take a milk carton and cut an opening on its side. You do not have to throw out the portion you have cut out, though. You can fold it and glue it to the upper side of the opening on the milk carton so it would look like a flap. This flap should be stiff so it would not fall on the heads of the birds as they feed from the milk carton.

Once that is done, you fill the carton with bird seed and then prop it up where the birds can reach it.

3. A kite from paper bags

We usually throw away paper grocery bags, but these can be good materials for recycling projects for kids. All you need to do is to get your kids to paint these grocery bags any way they want, attach strings to it, and then go flying kites.

An important thing that you should remember when making your children do recycling projects for kids is to supervise them, especially when they are using sharp objects like scissors, so they would not harm themselves.

TV Guidelines for Kids - How Much Is Too Much And What Should Your Child Be Watching Anyway?

What did we ever do before the boob tube? Television has taken the "family" out of family time. Everyone's eyes are glued to the television set and no one is talking. By setting a few guidelines, you can keep your kids from becoming strangers in their own home.

Set specific times for watching television. Some kids turn the television on as soon as they get in the house in the afternoons. On Saturday, they get out of bed and plop on the couch with the remote control. If left unregulated, television will take over your child's life. During the week, television viewing should be kept to a maximum of two to two and a half hours. When kids get home, they have homework and chores that need to be done first.

Turn the television off during dinner. I have been guilty of this myself. We grab out plates and a TV (how funny!) tray and head for the living room to continue watching our favorite show. Dinner time is family time. Everyone should sit at the table without the television and discuss their day. Something exciting may have happened at school or your husband may have gotten a raise. We miss out on getting to know each other if we don't spend time talking to one another. The one truly sacred time we have for that is at the dinner table.

We are a world that is getting fatter by the day. When I was a kid, we played outside until the street lights came on. Kids stay in the house and play video games or watch television. When do people tend to overeat? They don't pay attention to how much they are putting in their mouths when they are doing something else, like watching TV. Kids are too young to be inactive. They are the largest growing segment of the population suffering from obesity. Children are becoming couch potatoes from watching too much television.

Rules need to be established for watching television in the bedroom. Most kids do have televisions in their bedrooms. Sitting up all night watching the late, late show is a no-no. If kids choose to use their television time right before bed, set the sleep timer on the set. This way, the television will automatically shut off at their bedtime hour so they can get a good night's sleep.

What a child watches on television is as important as how much. There are all sorts of reality shows and nighttime television dramas that are not appropriate for children under the age of thirteen. Some are inappropriate for children under eighteen. Cable and satellite don't make it any easier to monitor what they watch. On regular television, most programs with mature subject matter don't air until eleven o'clock or later. On cable, they can air all evening. Those stations are not regulated like the local channels; therefore as a parent, actively paying attention to what your kids are watching is important.

If you can't be home with your kids at all times, you can block certain channels on the television. Stations that air shows that you feel are inappropriate for your child's age cannot be accessed by them if you block the channel. You can call your local cable or satellite company to find out how to go about doing this with their service. If your kids complain, sit them down and explain why they can't watch the channel. Entering into a healthy discussion about TV programs is important. As your kids age, they can handle heavier subject matter, but that is the decision of the parent.

Television is meant to be entertaining, but not to take over your life. Children need to be active not sedentary. Parents need to regulate television time for their kids. Instead, go to the park or the zoo. Real life is much more interesting than anything on TV.

Favorite Christmas Songs for Kids

What do kids love most about Christmas? The gifts, of course! When Santa and the elves dream big, children explode with delight. But the holiday season is about more than gift giving, and kids celebrate Christmas in a variety of ways. Chief among them are Christmas carols. There's no better way for kids to spread a little Yuletide cheer than singing "Joy to the World" at the top of their lungs. Thankfully for those of us who see the magic of the Yuletide season most clearly through the eyes of children, there are plenty of great kids carols to go around. Here, we'd like to present you with the 10 kids Christmas songs we think are the best of the best, in no particular order:

Joy to the World - Okay, we have to start with this one because we've already made a fuss over it. This song reminds us what Christmas is all about.

Frosty the Snowman - What kid doesn't love to sing this song? There's no beating a white Christmas, and building a snowman with mom and dad is as fun as it gets.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer - Without question the most popular and endearing children's Christmas carol of all-time.

Jingle Bells - "Dashing through the snow ..." Can you finish the next line? Of course you can, all the way to the chorus! And your kids can, too. This song is as catchy as they come.

Here Comes Santa Claus - This song is filled with anticipation and promise. Kids go to bed on Christmas Eve with its words in their heads ... "'cause Santa Claus comes tonight!"

Here We Come A-Caroling - Festive and upbeat, this is indeed the quintessential caroling song. It even wishes a happy new year. What more could you want?

Up on the Housetop - Another song about Santa. Could the picture get any clearer? Santa's impending arrival is definitely worth singing about!

The 12 Days of Christmas - Thought we might forget this one, didn't you? Not a chance.

Winter Wonderland - Christmas is magical no matter the weather. But let's face it, waking up to a Winter Wonderland on the big day certainly helps set the mood!

O Christmas Tree - Across America, elementary schools often celebrate the season before the holiday break with caroling or choirs. This song is on the set list almost without fail. It pays homage to the very tree we meticulously decorate each December, the tree under which Santa leaves gifts for the kids who have been good. The Christmas Tree is an integral part of our tradition. How can we not sing about it?

So there you have it, the 10 best kids Christmas songs ever written. How'd we do? We're sure we left off a few, but there are just too many great songs not to.

6 Safety Tips For Bunk Beds and Your Kids

Your little baby is growing up fast! It seems just like yesterday you were putting together a crib. Now, your child is ready for the next stage of life. And with just a little planning and research, your child's next bed can be as safe for him as his crib was-and a lot more fun!

1. Closing the gap

Fatal deaths associated with bunk beds are not usually caused by the child falling from the top bunk. Fatalities occur, usually, when a small child is strangled between the gap between an ill-fitting mattress and the bunk bed frame. Never allow a child under 6 to be on the top bunk. Measure any gap you find between the guardrail and the mattress: if it's greater than 3 inches, a child could slip through be fatally injured.

2. Check your supports

It might be just a result of normal horseplay, but many bunk-bed related injuries are caused by kids in the bottom bunk who push up at the top bunk. This type of activity can be lessened by ensuring that the top bunk is supported by sturdy supports that are fastened in place by secure hardware. Please, no floating board support systems; these tend to move around a lot, and increase the likelihood of injuries.

3. The right mattress

This is very scary, and very important: children have been strangled in the US and throughout the world by falling through openings between a bunk bed mattress and its frame while they've been sleeping. Make sure your mattress fits snugly. A gap greater than three inches anywhere spells trouble. Ask your dealer for help if you're not sure.

4. Rails on both sides

Bring your ruler when you go shopping, because the lower guard or safety rails should be no more than 3.5 inches above the height of the mattress. Any higher than that, and little children may be able to slip out. On the top bed, guard rails should run on both sides of the bunk-and the top safety rail should be at least five inches above the top of the mattress to prevent your child from tumbling out. Eventually, all of us learn how to sleep without tumbling out of bed, but children have not yet learned this.

5. Horseplay

Yes, bunk beds are fun, but parents, please take a moment to teach your children the hazards of rough play, and the consequences for participating in rough play. Make sure children are using the ladder properly, and not sliding down the ladder, just for the fun of it.

6. Metal Beds

Metal bunk beds may be more prone to collapse; constant motion tends to jiggle the bolts loose. Regularly inspect your metal beds for breaks or cracks. Also, keep an eye on the fin tabs-those support devices located in or near the beds eight corners. If your bed is damaged, stop using it immediately and contact your dealer for advise on repair or replacement. Reputable dealers offer a lifetime warranty.

We hope your new bunk beds bring many hours of enjoyment and comfort to your life. Good luck!

Malem Bedwetting Alarm - A Must-Have System For Bed Wetters

Bedwetting happens to be a very common problem that plagues a lot of parents today. Whenever a child reaches the age of six or seven, this isn't really much of a problem because bedwetting at this age is quite normal. However, some children still wet their beds even after they reach ten years old. Then there are those who can't stop bedwetting even in their teenage or adult years. These problems can be quite extreme and some of them are no longer just habits, but serious problems. Either way, a Malem bedwetting alarm would be a must-have system for you.

Yes, parents should know that an alarm would be the greatest solution for any bed wetter in the family. These alarms usually exist as corded or wireless, but the wireless Malem ultimate bedwetting alarm would definitely be the best one to date. This Malem alarm does not work exactly like any corded alarm. While corded alarms come with sensors that connect through a wire, Malem bedwetting alarms are wireless and merely come with a clip-on sensor. The transmitter of the Malem alarms will then convey signals to the receiver, so that he can act on it. All you have to do is attach it to the child's (or adult's) close fitting underwear for it to work.

Overall, though, the principle of its function is still exactly like those of corded wetting alarms. So, if your child ends up wetting his pajamas, the sensors will detect the moisture and produce a sound that will alert the child. In fact, the sound will be so strong that it will probably alert you, too, so you can check on him. Make sure that it is attached to your child's underwear, though, so the noise does not bother him and so that it can detect the moisture properly.

Of course, once your child's bladder gets full, he might just wake you so you can take him to the bathroom. Bigger kids can simply go on their own. However, this Malem bedwetting alarm proves to be perfect for any age - young child, big child, teenager or adult. Although older bed wetters may hate the thought of wearing the Malem alarm every night, Malem alarm reviews still show that it is perfect for every bed wetter to wear, even if he doesn't wet the bed every night.

Creative Summer Activities for Kids

When you're a kid there's nothing better than Summer. There's nothing worse, however, than Summer boredom. Maybe it's too hot, maybe it's too rainy, maybe every tree has been climbed and every rock overturned and the daily grind is just getting too unbearable, but there's bound to be a day or two when your child (and maybe you) just needs something new to do. Well before you turn on the TV and zone out in front of a movie or video game, try one of these creative activities sure to encourage imagination and cure that hot, dreary Summer boredom.

Your Kid, the Author

As an author of children's books, myself, this project is a personal favorite. Sit down with your own little author and a few pages of paper, ten or so should do to start, and help him or her write and illustrate their own exciting adventure. The creative process is difficult to structure sometimes, especially with kids, but you can still helpfully guide them through the creation and, if you're lucky, maybe they'll give you a co-author credit on Amazon.

Of course, it takes more than a few scribbles and delightfully misspelled words to make a book. Once your kid is finished penning the next great American novel, it will doubtlessly deserve a cover. This final touch can be as exciting and easy a project as the rest of the book but gives it a "realness" that can't be matched.

Take two pieces of cardboard the same size as your books (or maybe just a little larger for effect), and decorate them exactly as you would expect the front and back cover of a New York Bestseller to look. You can even encourage your kid to write a short bio for the back of the book: "Billy Myers is six years old and likes frogs and castles. He lives in Maine next door to Stephen King and the two play sandbox games together on Tuesday evenings." Then add a barcode, price your book appropriately, and you're ready for binding.

Use a hole punch to perforate the pages of the book as well as the cover in approximately the same place along the spine-side of the book. Use something appropriate and personal to tie the whole book together, maybe some twine or a shoelace, and secure the knot with a little glue if you don't trust your knot-tying skills. For added effect, use something blunt to crease the cardboard right where it bends open.

Before you know it you'll have spent the whole afternoon making a priceless keepsake that you can file away and keep forever. Just be sure you negotiate ahead of time your percentage of the royalties for editing and representation.

Your Kid, the Artist

Crayons on a place mat at Denny's can only go so far when developing your child's artistic side. Spice up their creativity and imagination with a truly unique project on a truly impressive scale. A word to the wise, however, this is an exercise best executed outside, and you'll soon discover why...

You need a few supplies to begin this project, namely some paint, some brushes, a bed sheet, and some old clothes nearing retirement for you AND Junior. Especially Junior. Cheap bed sheets can be found in consignment shops or taken out of dusty cabinets at your sister's place. She'll never miss them.

The steps are simple. Take your old bed sheet/new canvas outside and lay it on the ground. Weigh down the corners with rocks or bricks, and start painting. It's a deceptively simple project, but put yourself in your kid's shoes (metaphorically). Those sheets are big enough for YOU to wrap up inside them, so they're absolutely monstrous to your child! The scale of the painting alone will be enough to change ho-hum art time into an exciting new adventure.

And be sure you and your kid really get into it (this is where the old clothes come in). Allow you child (and yourself) some real messy time. Long forgotten will be the days of finger painting once the joys of fist, elbow, nose, and feet painting are experienced. Outline yourselves on the sheet and color clothes and accessories onto your silhouettes. In the end if there isn't almost as much paint on your bodies as is on the bed sheet, you'll just have to try harder next time to truly immerse yourself in the adventure. Just be sure to plan ahead and have a hose/towels available so you don't leave pink and blue footprints through the house.

Bunk Beds - A Soldier Bed No More

When one hears the word "Bunk Bed" the immediate thing that comes into mind is the two story bed which is prevalently used in army barracks. The simple Spartan design speaks little of its aesthetic potential. For years it was known as "soldier's bed" which is painted with dull colors and sparsely embellished. Yet, a bunk bed serves it purpose - it can accommodate two persons in a space that only fit a single bed. As such it considered as an effective space saver and a viable solution to space problem which is prevalent in modern homes.

Bunk beds can easily re-invented just the way other kind of furniture designs were re-introduced into modern homes. It can be designed stylishly as a children bed. In doing so, its frame should be strengthened and its ladder reinforced in order that it can carry heavy weights. To make it safe, side bars should be installed to ensure that children using the upper deck will not roll over. In addition, it should be built with a smooth and polished finish to prevent accidental cuts and bruises when children use it.

A modern design for the bunk bed will change how homeowners will look at it. With the right design, it will cease to be known as simply a "soldier's bed" but a stylish and functional bedroom furniture. It can be safe and durable second bed for children who want to stay in the same room. It can also be an instant bed for overnight guests in lieu of a guest room.

Scripture Memorization For Kids Made Easy

It is so easy to teach children scripture memorization. From birth to age 7, kids are able to easily memorize all kinds of things. If parents tap into the potential children have to memorize, they can teach them many verses of scripture with little effort.

Have you noticed that you still remember words to songs you learned as a child? It is difficult to forget them, but what about songs that you learned at an older age? You might remember the chorus and some of the words, but you will probably forget some of the lyrics. This is because children easily remember all kinds of things.

Did you have to learn any poems as a child? If so you probably still remember them. This is all due to the developing brain. It allows children to easily memorize all sorts of things.

Christian parents can tap into this potential to teach their children important scriptures. There a several ways you can do this. You can choose one verse per week and read it to your child each day. You can do this before bed, in the morning when they wake up, or at mealtimes. Just choose a set time and stick with it, so it becomes part of your routine.

You can write out the scripture verse and place it on the refrigerator or in the child's bedroom. Each time you see the verse, just repeat it out loud. You will be surprised at how quickly your child will fill in the rest of the verse. If you pause, you will hear your child finish the verse for you. You will also hear your child saying it with you.

Once you have mastered a verse, move on to a new verse. You can introduce a new verse each week, in order to make it easy to stick to a schedule. Each Sunday bring out a new verse of scripture to learn with your child.

You may want to keep a binder with the verses you have already learned. Maybe once a week you should quickly review the previously learned verses. This will keep them fresh in your child's mind, so they don't quickly forget them.

Scripture memorization can become a fun pastime for families to do together. You can make a game out of it and see who knows more verses.

Birdhouses For Kids To Make

Building birdhouses with your child is not only good for the child's motor and creative skills but it can also help your child build a better understanding of nature. Here are some ideas for simple birdhouses for kids to make.

One of the easiest birdhouses for a kid to make is made out of an empty half-gallon milk carton. Make sure that the milk carton is washed thoroughly and dried before you start constructing it. First recluse the milk carton and staple it shut. Then wrap the entire milk carton with 2" masking tape so that none of the original carton shows. Rub the wrapped carton with shoe polish or color it with markers so that it resembles tree bark. Make a hole in the side of the carton so the birdhouse has a doorway. Poke several holes in the bottom of the carton with a sharp pen to make holes so that water can drain out when it rains. Pierce another hole in the top of the milk carton through which string or wire can be threaded to hang it from a tree.

You can also build a birdhouse using paper mache and balloons. The recipe for papier mache is newspaper strips boiled in water for thirty minutes and two cups of flour. You then construct this unusual round birdhouse by layering strips of papier-mache over the balloon but at the same time making sure that you leave a hole that will serve as the bird's front door. Once the papier-mâché has dried you can pop the balloon, paint the papier-mâché with brightly colored paint and hang it in a tree.

Another one of the simple birdhouses for kids to make is created out of an old garden hat. Simply find an old straw hat and tape fabric to the bottom of it so that it makes an enclosed structure. Make a hole in the side of the hat for a doorway and suspend this from a tree. The birds will use the rim of the hat as a perch.

Another idea is to build a nesting shelf for barn swallows, robins or phoebes. These can be made from any wooden box that does not have a lid and that is roughly the size of a shoebox. All this shelf needs is a hook that is situated so that the rectangular box can hang vertically. The birds will naturally roost and build their nests in the open cavity. This type of "open" birdhouse can easily be nailed to a tree, fence post or front porch.

Another very simple project for kids is a nesting cone for doves. Doves dislike birdhouses and instead prefer to hang around in trees. Unfortunately they also build very flimsy nests that are quickly blown away by the wind and rain. To make a more secure home for doves, simply take a foot long length of finely meshed screen and wrap it into a cone shape. You can stabilize this armature using tiny pieces of wire. The dove cone nest is then placed high up in a tree so that the birds recognize it as a good place to build their next home.

Bird watching is a fun, inexpensive activity for families. You can reserve a special space for bird feeders anywhere in your yard, and throughout the year watch the variety of birds that come to visit. If your child is a little older and can handle hammer, nails and glue there are a large variety of plans for birdhouses that kid can make available for free all over the internet. Usually the provider of the plans can tell you what age group the project is best suited for. Your library is a superb source of blueprints for many types of nest boxes. In addition, your state wildlife or provincial wildlife department or boy or girl scout troupe may offer free, or inexpensive waxed cardboard bluebird boxes, which only require folding to create a sturdy little structure.

You can also buy commercial bird house kits for kids that come with pre cut lumber, galvanized screws and bird-friendly non-toxic paint. Once again these are for older children who are more experienced with carpentry and handling sharper tools.

Top Reasons Why an Aerobed is Better Than a Sleeper Sofa Or a Cot Type Folding Bed

The Aerobed Air Mattress is nearing its two decades of existence. That's a lot of years of providing great comfort and well rested sleep for a lot of people who have patronized the product. In the past these beds have been viewed as beds just for camping or travel, but more and more people are realizing how useful these beds are for visitors to your home; both kids and adults.

It is a known fact that nothing beats a good rest. And it can only be achieved if you have the most comfortable bed or mattress to lie down on. But do you have to buy air mattress beds to have that ultimate in sleeping convenience? Let us take a closer look at the other alternatives that you can buy and you probably have been used to all these years.

Folding Bed

Almost every home has one, especially apartments and those that do not have an extra room or space for another full sized bed. By itself it is not so comfortable to use because it is usually made of hard materials. However you can put kapok or other softer mattresses over it so you can have a better sleeping time.

Sleeper Sofa

There are many types of this sofa variant. This is a bigger alternative to an air mattress or any ordinary mattress. It is really a full sized sofa that has a part, usually under the sofa, that allows you to pull out the mattress portion. This will then transform the sofa into a complete bed. All you need to do is to put a bed sheet over it and a soft pillow and your guest is all set for a comfy all-nighter. However, these type sofas are generally know for being a very heavy piece of furniture.

Sofa Bed Mattress

Any sofa bed or sleeper sofa needs an actual mattress, usually as an addition to the existing cushion or upholstery which is normally not soft or comfortable enough for most people. This is a great thing because you can then choose the sofa bed style that you want, and then separately pick and purchase a mattress for it. What this means is that even if you don't like the cushion that comes with the sofa that you like, you can just get another mattress to put over it.

Now that we have listed and described the three main alternatives to an Aerobed, why should you still prefer the latter? One good reason is for the comfort that it provides to the sleeper. Because it is made of air, you can easily adjust the softness or the firmness of the bed just by adding or letting out more air. It's all your choice.

Second, you can easily store away an Aerobed in a closet, under another bed or just put it aside in a corner. By simply deflating it, you can pack it wherever you want.

Third, with an air mattress frame you can raise the air mattress off the floor. There are many designs and styles available that you can choose from. If you don't want to use a frame you can still be raised off the floor some by getting an Aero bed Raised. This style is a little more comfortable for adults because it is easier to get up and down to and from. Kids typically like the Aerobed For Kids version.

In the end, it is still your own choice on whichever type of bed that you want to use in your home. However, keep in mind the many factors that you should consider like the amount space that you have, the ease of use (especially during times when you have surprise guests), and also the durability of the product. You are after all buying another piece of furniture that you will certainly expect to give you service for many years to come.

Goal Setting Activities For Kids

The power of setting and achieving goals is perhaps the most significant lesson a child can learn. Whether your child wants to be a doctor, a professional athlete, a teacher or a scientist, goal setting should be a key aspect of their lives.

Here are some goal setting activities for kids that will help in their development as children, and perhaps as adults as well:

Let their imaginations run wild:

Kids have unlimited imaginations. Get them to think about their goals and to use their imaginations to visualize what they want to achieve. Let them imagine what they would like to become, what they want to do, where they want to live, and who they want to be.

Writing goals down:

Get them into the habit of writing down things they want to achieve every week or every month. It can be really simple like what level they want to reach in the video game they're playing, or how many points they want to score when they play sports, or how much of their pocket money they can save every week.

Once they get into the habit of writing down their goals for small activities, they will feel at ease with the idea of writing down their goals of the bigger things they want to accomplish. This may be one of the simplest goal setting activities for kids, but also the most beneficial.

Develop plans:

Once the kids have defined their goals, perhaps with your assistance, they must create a plan of actions that they must take to achieve their goals. This is an important factor of goal setting activities for kids. It will teach them that they will need to develop plans as to how to achieve anything.

Regularly checking whether they are on the right track will also teach them to remain focused, or to adjust their plans if it is necessary.

Remaining focused:

Get them into the routine of reading their list of goals every day, preferably before they go to bed and after they wake up. This will keep them focused on what their goals are and will get them to continually think about their goals.

Celebrate accomplishments:

Perhaps the most enjoyable and most rewarding of the goal setting activities for kids is to allow the kids to celebrate after achieving a goal. Give them something as a surprise reward for the dedication, focus and persistence they displayed during the process of achieving the goals.

Goal setting activities for kids should be fun and enjoyable. They also contain valuable life lessons for the kids that will serve them well right into their adult years.

"Go to Bed, Now!" My Wife's Secret Method For Getting the Kids to Bed

Coming home to a warm hearth and home after a day of work is one of Dad's favorite parts of the day. After hours of irate client phone calls, financial balance sheets, monotonous factory work or even for work-at-home dads, coming home to a warm dinner, warm home and warm hugs from his loved ones is one of the very reasons we go to work.

Coming home at 9:30 one night, I was expecting to hear a "welcome home, honey!" from my wife, or, since we live in Japan, the Japanese greeting, "okaerinasai!" (Welcome home). What I heard from Emiko instead was a groan of disappointment and frustration. Was my coming home so terrible?

As is always the case, she had her reasons: the kids had just about drifted off to sleep when they heard my key in the front door lock. Eyes were re-opened, the "Daddy's home!" festival began.

Now far be it from me to refuse an invitation to wrestle with my 3 and 5 year old. Getting smothered with kisses from the 3 year old princess is one of the highlights of my day...however, the wrestling and kissing escalated to screaming and singing, jumping and dancing. At close to 11:00, it was getting late. And tomorrow was a preschool day.

After a few of these nights, we parents realized we had to make some changes.

Emiko at first suggested I just come home later, say 11:00, when the kids were asleep. "Just a minute," I replied, "I want to come home and see my kids!"

Finally, in a moment of genius, Emiko drew up a chart and posted it on the wall. It was full of fun drawings of our kids doing the behaviors that we all agree we should be aiming for. Getting up by 7:00. Eating breakfast, changing clothes, getting to preschool by 9:00. In the afternoon, helping mom, taking a bath, eating dinner with nice manners, brushing teeth, to bed by 9:00. You get the idea.

So for each activity, under each child's name, they can, if they accomplish their task, get a sticker. That's it. Just a little colorful "dot" next to each activity. The child decides by themself if they will reward themselves a sticker. Get ten in a day and you get a BIG sticker for that day.

Not high-tech, at all. But it's posted on the wall, and best of all, it works. When you make yours, get the kids to input some of the activities and behaviors they should shoot for. Giving them a voice in how they are disciplined helps them "buy in" and feel ownership and responsibility for their own behavior. Make it colorful, and fun, a game with no losers. I think you'll be amazed by the changes in motivation you'll see.

Creating the Perfect Fantasy Kids Rooms

The first step to creating a fantasy kids room for your kid is to identify his or her fantasy. Does your child want to be a race car driver or an astronaut, a deep sea diver or a forest ranger, a Princess or a Pirate? To begin creating your kids fantasy bedroom, then, find out what your child's idea of a perfect fantasy kids room is.

The best fantasy kids rooms are those designed around a theme. Why? Because when all the individual elements of a bedroom contribute to the same overall vision, it creates a unity of elements and gives the room a comforting sense of wholeness that a slapdash jumble of every cool accessory and idea that catches their fancy can never give.

Help your child choose a theme for their fantasy kids room and you'll be able to create an entire world of their own that they can immerse themselves in with pleasure and delight.

Some fantasy theme room ideas for boys include: tropical jungle safari, ocean voyage, space voyage, vehicles (planes, trains, automobiles), construction zone, medieval kingdom, rock star, the Wild West - and so on.

Some fantasy theme room ideas for girls include: tea party, floral meadow or garden, Princess, movie star's dressing room, prima ballerina, carnival, animals, undersea world - and so on.

Once you and your child have settled on a theme, a easy way to begin designing a fantasy kids room around that theme is with a custom theme bed as its centerpiece. A little boy wanting a jungle fantasy theme room, for example, will go ape for a custom treehouse bed. A little girl wanting a Princess fantasy theme room, on the other hand, will treasure a custom castle bed. The possibilities are endless!

The added benefit of starting with a custom theme bed is that you can them create the rest of the fantasy kids room around that one prominent item.

A great next step is to select a color scheme based on the theme and custom bed. Pick pillows, bedding, curtains, borders, rugs, carpet, paint, wallpaper, furniture, accessories, all to compliment that color scheme. Oceanic scenes (whether above or below the sea), for example, will have a lot of blues. Garden parties and jungle safaris will have a lot of greens. You can see how easy it is to come up with colors once you've first chosen a theme.

The final step in the process, then, becomes simply to accessorize. Animal-themed fantasy kids rooms, for example, might call for some stuffed animals placed about, castle fantasy kids rooms (whether for a Princess or a Prince) might benefit from a coat of arms on the wall. Again, the ideas are endless.

So sit down with your kids as soon as you can, and start designing the fantasy kids rooms that will make their fantasies come true.

Choosing the Perfect Bunk Bed Mattress

Nobody would like an uncomfortable bed. Hence, in order to avoid back pains and sleepless nights, which most of us complain about, it's better to choose the right bunk bed mattress. And with metal beds or wood loft beds it's highly advised to know what mattress wouldn't let the surface hurt.

Mattresses range from spring core to foam filled. The basics for choosing the right beds will highly depend on the kind of bunk bed you choose. Following are the points to keep in mind while buying a mattress:

Size of Mattress

While choosing a mattress for a kid's bed, it is necessary to keep your child's safety in mind. Do not buy a mattress that is too thick as it may not fit in the bed frame. It might exceed the height of your guard rail and hence eliminating the motive of installing a guard rail. Your kid might fall off the edge easily.

Choose the perfect mattress size as a smaller bed mattress might prove dangerous as well. Body parts of the kid might get stuck in the ensuing space between the mattress and the frame. Even too thin bed mattresses aren't a good option as they cannot hold more weight over them.

Moreover thin mattresses lead to back pains which are highly detested. Attaching a foundation is a good option as for metal bunk and a mattress of thickness 4-5 inches will just be perfect. Spring mattresses are not much advised for bunk especially in wood loft beds, as they are the major reason for back problems.

For Futon

The case of futon beds is the one requiring utmost care while buying mattress. The mattress bought for the lower bed should be easily debunk able. If the mattress for futon bed is not properly sort, there will be discomfiture due to the piercing space in it, caused by its couch form during daytime.

Other Precautions

Also, care should be taken that the mattress can be easily displaced to deal with the bed-bugs. Along with these things, make sure that you buy double-bed mattress of proper size for your bed with double beds. Advisable is not using single bed mattresses for double beds and double-bed mattresses for single bunk bed.

Finally, a good bunk mattress depends on individual comforts. Try considering what kind of mattresses makes you feel comfortable and cozy to get you a good night sleep.

Bunk Beds for Kids

Bunks beds have been a very popular piece of furniture for many years. It is quite versatile and can save a lot of room esp. in small cramp bedrooms. A bunk bed is a type of bed in which one bed is stacked on top of another. They are typically used as furnishings in children's rooms, allowing two children to sleep in the same room while maximizing available floor space. They normally are supported by four poles at each corner of the bed. To get to the second bunk a ladder is used, though taller children often find other faster methods of climbing into them. The top bed normally is surrounded by a railing to prevent the sleeper from falling out.

They are great space savers, but also they can be dangerous as well if kids are not told how to stay safe! Did you know each year; thousands of children go to the hospital for emergency room treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds? Most of these injuries are minor and occur when children fall from the top bunk. Children playing and fighting frequently contributes to these mishaps. Teach children that rough play is very unsafe around and on beds and other types of furniture. There are even “thankfully rare” instances of very serious hazards associated with bunk beds that have suffocation or hanging deaths.

To keep your children safe there are some tips you can follow. One very important rule is not to permit kids less than 6 years of age to sleep in the upper bunk. This one rule can help to prevent many accidents. In fact I would enforce the younger ones not to even get up there at all for any reason, less chance of children falling from there.

Just as important as that tip, is to always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk! Keep guardrails securely in place at all times no matter what the age of the child. Children move around during sleep and may roll out of bed into the floor.

Make sure the kids know to use the ladder properly and safely. Also they should be told to use the ladder at all times and not to try to climb the bed to the top. They should be reminded this is used for sleeping and rest, bunk beds are not toys or used for fun! Follow theses simple tips and you should be ok. A Disney Princess bed will usually consists of a beautifully designed bed that will incorporate many of the princesses made famous by the Disney movies. These characters will be women that all little girls are sure to be aware of. The names of some of these princesses include Belle from Beauty and The Beast, Tiana from The Frog Princess, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty and lastly the lovely Cinderella.

A toddler bed will tend to be made so that it can take a maximum weight limit of 50lbs. This limit really should be more than sufficient to take the body weight of a little child and even her stuffed plush animals and dolls that tend to populate all kids bedrooms. The bed itself is made of very robust and yet lightweight components and will have been produced with the intention that it does not sit too high up from the ground. This is very important simply because you want to guarantee that your young child is completely safe always.

The structure of these sorts of beds has also been set at a low level to be able to be sure that a toddler has easy accessibility in and out of one. This also has the added bonus of giving a small chance the ability to get into one by themselves.. It also ensures that if your child has to get out of bed, for example, to go to the bathroom, then she will certainly not cause herself any harm because her feet will be able to seek out the floor quite easily.

The standard sizes for this sort of bed frame means that the mattress that you have for your crib is the same size as this bed frame. You could therefore take the old mattress and get more use out of it. The size of this bed should be adequate for quit a few years before you have to replace it for a full size bed.

There are quite a few girls' beds that you can choose but if your little one is a big fan of all things Disney, then a pretty pink Disney bed might be the perfect choice.
