Starting School - What Age Should Children Begin School?

"What age should my child start school?"

This is a common question that concerns many parents. It is complicated if your child's birthday happens to fall near a closing date for new school enrolments.

There are many factors to consider including: a child's gender, his or her general readiness and maturity and also family circumstances such as sibling proximity.

However as a general rule I advise parents not to rush children down the academic track. It is tempting to get children off to Pre School or school at the earliest possible age, particularly if your child is socially aware and generally a bright spark.

It is a mistake to assume that an early start in any area is a good start. The Finnish experience stands out as a beacon for parents and educators all over the world. Even though Finnish education authorities have delayed the start of school until as late as seven years there appears little or no gap between educational performances at the later end of school. In fact, in terms of dropout rates and readiness for further education those kids seem streets ahead.

Currently, in many Western countries we seem to hell-bent in shaping environments for kids from the earliest possible ages to maximise learning and child development. Nothing wrong with that per se but we must keep it in perspective and remember that kids need time, space and opportunity to be kids. That means that they shouldn't always be in an adult-structured environment or live in a childhood that is an adults' version of what a childhood should be. They need space and time to explore, climb, hide, balance, bounce, and use their imaginations. And adults don't have to do all that much to allow this to happen. Kids will climb and bounce on furniture, hide behind chairs and turn a living room into a space ship given half a chance and the television off.

It is tempting to underestimate the importance of parents' as a child's first early teacher. Pick up a parenting magazine and you will see all sorts of advertisements for early childhood classes ranging from movement through to music classes. Okay, there are some experiences a parent can't provide but I am unsure of the wisdom of cluttering child's early lives with music, ballet and tennis lesson and neglecting the chance of giving them a chance to daydream, explore and just muck around.

Children's basic needs don't change. The foundations of early social, physical and mental needs are laid in the first seven years - and it is through play that children develop most.

What has changed is the amount of time a child spends sitting rather than being active, the ever-shrinking age that stress can kick in and how some kids barely have time to be kids.

Providing opportunities for outside play and activity at home is important. One-to-one interaction with a parent is important to boost confidence, promote language development and teach problem solving and perseverance.

The best start for a child is to have the chance to grow up in a relaxed atmosphere with the time and space to explore his physical and social environment; to mix with his peers in a mixture of structured and unstructured environments and plenty of language and experiential rich one-on-one time with a trusted and caring adult. It sounds a lot like home!

The Sun is Out, So is School - Do You Know Where Your Kids Are?

Today's post is for parents who have just realized that it is the end of the school year, which means that school will be out soon, and their kiddies will roam free until the end of August.

Keeping your kids out of harm's way over the summer is one of the primary concerns of parents everywhere. And yes, you guessed it, I am going to suggest that you teach your kids how to dance. And here is why:

One: it will give them something to do. Dancing, especially Ballroom dancing tends to get pretty involved, which means your kids will not only be occupied during class time, but will also need to practice what they've learned. This is also true for other dance styles, like Ballet, or Hip-hop. And what it means for you is a few peaceful hours a day when you know exactly where your kids are and what they are doing!

Two: dancing will teach your kids to be aware of themselves, their bodies, their behavior, as well as of others. Ballroom dancing is partner dancing. One of the most important aspects of Ballroom dancing, whether you choose a traditional Ballroom, or a Latin style, is learning to dance together with another person. It teaches one how to touch another person in a respectful manner, how to use your own body, how to work together as a team towards a common goal.

Three: it will give your kids a goal. The goal may be to learn a routine, to perform, to enter a competition, to learn enough to dance socially, to learn a particular dance (for example, if you are Hispanic, you may want your child to know how to Salsa). There are plenty of other goals you and your child can set, all of which will work just fine towards keeping his or her summer safe and productive.

Four: it will keep them exercising. Dancing is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Ballroom dancing in particular, also happens to be a cognitive exercise at the same time. It will keep your child's muscles and brain active at the same time.

Five: your child will have a new skill, and possibly a life-long hobby, that will promote physical health, great social skills, and long-lasting friendships.

Six: if none of these seem to make any sense, look at it this way: it is something to do! Classes designed for kids and teenagers tend to be cheaper than adult classes (so they won't break the bank), they will break up your kid's days, and they will give them something to do other than causing trouble!

And seven, if you wish, you may get into it as well. If you do decide to sign your kid up for a class, don't just drop them off, stay for a while and watch. You may like what you see! After all, Ballroom dancing (and dancing in general) is the most fun way of exercising ever invented!

So Happy Summer! And Happy Dancing!

After Prom Party and School Carnival Event Ideas

Spring is upon us, which means that just around the corner the school season will be winding up. For many students it means a time for fun and laughter. But for many high school juniors and seniors, their minds are focus on prom night.

Prom night is a major highlight of many students high school career. On this night, everything is planned to be perfect and run smoothly. This can also be a stressful time for the teachers and parents who attend prom. Staying on top of things and making sure that nothing gets "out of hand" can be somewhat overwhelming. Especially when it come to the prom after parties.

Many schools will arrange for games and activities to be held on campus to prevent the students from getting into trouble. Sadly, many students will never attend these functions, due to childish games or lack off interest. The key to remember is to try and find something that will keep the students attention and provide great entertainment. A question to ask yourself is, "Will the students be able to enjoy this time and time again?" Having games and activities that are fun, but only last for a short period of time will only lead the student to boredom. It is important to keep the students active and entertained.

When I was a freshman in college, my university held a block party for all arriving freshman. The university had blocked off two major intersections and parking lots so we could as walk about and interact. To keep up occupied and a part of the festivities, the university had rented an inflatable moonwalk, and an inflatable obstacle course. Students were lining up to try out these games and would still get back in line after they were done.

Inflated games have been hits for all types of school or even church events. They can provide safe and clean fun for students or adults. Most rental companies that offer inflatable games can usually be found on the Internet or in the yellow pages. But before you to decide on a company to rent from, hear are three things to think off.

1. What is the condition of the equipment?

2. Where is the company you are renting from located and is there a traveling fee?

3. Is there enough space to accommodate these inflated games at location of the party?

4. Ask the company for an approximate number of guests a game can allow per hour.

5. Does the company provide skilled equipment supervisors?

The idea behind these games is to bring laughter and enjoyment to everyone around. Keeping these five simple questions in mind, you will be able to decide if the company you are going to rent from is truly going to provide you with the best in inflatable entertainment possible.
