Attractive Themes And Ideas For Summer Camp

Whether you are planning a summer camp or planning on going to summer camp, it is a good idea to have a plan of action. As a camp coordinator, you have to plan events, activities and entertainment for the participants. There are many themes you can come up with, but to get the most participation out of a theme you have to make them sound fun and attractive. Remember that camp is about fun and enjoyment. As a camp participant you want your stay at camp to be enjoyable and something that will create memories of a lifetime.

When coming up with ideas for activities you need to know all about the facilities and their accommodations. Do you have a gym, baseball and football field, or a place to implement these types of games? Do you have hiking trails, lakes, rivers, boats, canoes, swimming, snorkeling or diving? You should have all this information available to you as to be able to fulfill a complete and full schedule for your participants.

Now that you have the information on what capabilities your facility has you can start making your plans. First you have to make the decisions on what type of activities or events you are going to do. Play games, cooking, nature hikes and exploration, mystery excursions, and so on. After you have come up with everything you are planning on doing, you then need to name your events. To name your events, you really need to be creative. You want to make the sound fun and exciting. But at the same time you do not want to over glorify the names as to lead to disappointment to the participants. You need to pick a name that will make the participants excited to participate without giving false expectations on what the program is all about.

Say if you are going to have an outdoor cooking activity, you need to come up with a unique name for it. Let's say something like, Cooking In The Wild. Now that you have your theme, how are you going to implement it? Would you make burgers on the grill? What would you call them to give it some excitement, Survivor Burgers, after the television show Survivor? It takes a lot of time, planning and creativity to make any event a success.

I have listed some ideas below that could be a theme for an event along with a suggested description of what that event might entail.

Wonders of Nature

For this event you might want to venture into insects, rodents, land formations, mosses, trees or birds. This type of event of has many options to choose from.

All Stars

For this event you would set up sporting games. Be if football, basketball, soccer, water balloons, Frisbee events and what ever other activities in the sporting them you can come up with.

Survivor

This is an event that could be set up on the television series "Survivor". You can set up treasure hunts, obstacle courses or play a creative game on survival.

Splash

This event name could be for your water adventures. You could play water volley ball, canoeing, swimming competitions, diving competitions or snorkeling.

A Day In The Knight

This event could be geared to learning about knighthood. You could get out the turkey legs and maybe play some knight games.

American Idol

This event since it is so popular on television would be a great event for the participants. They could all have a singing competition and let the participants be the judges.

The Red Light Special

This event could involve the Police and Fire Departments. They are usually more than will to volunteer their time for events with children. If there are K-9's they could give a demonstration. If there is a rescue diving team they could also give a demonstration. I would try to be more original on this event as most schools already have the police and firemen come to visit them on fire and protection issues. If they have access to the survive alive house, see if it would be possible for them to bring is also.

Around The World

This event could involve learning other countries customs. Another great idea for this would be to have the participants make some ethnic foods and sample foods from different countries.

Pick Your Star

This event could involve some astrology and learn the constellations. Each participant could also pick a star that is their own, giving them a certificate of ownership.

The Sweet Tooth

This event could involve children's favorite foods. They might make cakes, cookies or candies.

So as you can see, there is a lot of time and effort that goes into the implementation of setting up Summer Camp themes. But with due diligence you will get the job accomplished and the participants will have a great time and something they will remember for a life time.

Creative Summer Activities for Kids

When you're a kid there's nothing better than Summer. There's nothing worse, however, than Summer boredom. Maybe it's too hot, maybe it's too rainy, maybe every tree has been climbed and every rock overturned and the daily grind is just getting too unbearable, but there's bound to be a day or two when your child (and maybe you) just needs something new to do. Well before you turn on the TV and zone out in front of a movie or video game, try one of these creative activities sure to encourage imagination and cure that hot, dreary Summer boredom.

Your Kid, the Author

As an author of children's books, myself, this project is a personal favorite. Sit down with your own little author and a few pages of paper, ten or so should do to start, and help him or her write and illustrate their own exciting adventure. The creative process is difficult to structure sometimes, especially with kids, but you can still helpfully guide them through the creation and, if you're lucky, maybe they'll give you a co-author credit on Amazon.

Of course, it takes more than a few scribbles and delightfully misspelled words to make a book. Once your kid is finished penning the next great American novel, it will doubtlessly deserve a cover. This final touch can be as exciting and easy a project as the rest of the book but gives it a "realness" that can't be matched.

Take two pieces of cardboard the same size as your books (or maybe just a little larger for effect), and decorate them exactly as you would expect the front and back cover of a New York Bestseller to look. You can even encourage your kid to write a short bio for the back of the book: "Billy Myers is six years old and likes frogs and castles. He lives in Maine next door to Stephen King and the two play sandbox games together on Tuesday evenings." Then add a barcode, price your book appropriately, and you're ready for binding.

Use a hole punch to perforate the pages of the book as well as the cover in approximately the same place along the spine-side of the book. Use something appropriate and personal to tie the whole book together, maybe some twine or a shoelace, and secure the knot with a little glue if you don't trust your knot-tying skills. For added effect, use something blunt to crease the cardboard right where it bends open.

Before you know it you'll have spent the whole afternoon making a priceless keepsake that you can file away and keep forever. Just be sure you negotiate ahead of time your percentage of the royalties for editing and representation.

Your Kid, the Artist

Crayons on a place mat at Denny's can only go so far when developing your child's artistic side. Spice up their creativity and imagination with a truly unique project on a truly impressive scale. A word to the wise, however, this is an exercise best executed outside, and you'll soon discover why...

You need a few supplies to begin this project, namely some paint, some brushes, a bed sheet, and some old clothes nearing retirement for you AND Junior. Especially Junior. Cheap bed sheets can be found in consignment shops or taken out of dusty cabinets at your sister's place. She'll never miss them.

The steps are simple. Take your old bed sheet/new canvas outside and lay it on the ground. Weigh down the corners with rocks or bricks, and start painting. It's a deceptively simple project, but put yourself in your kid's shoes (metaphorically). Those sheets are big enough for YOU to wrap up inside them, so they're absolutely monstrous to your child! The scale of the painting alone will be enough to change ho-hum art time into an exciting new adventure.

And be sure you and your kid really get into it (this is where the old clothes come in). Allow you child (and yourself) some real messy time. Long forgotten will be the days of finger painting once the joys of fist, elbow, nose, and feet painting are experienced. Outline yourselves on the sheet and color clothes and accessories onto your silhouettes. In the end if there isn't almost as much paint on your bodies as is on the bed sheet, you'll just have to try harder next time to truly immerse yourself in the adventure. Just be sure to plan ahead and have a hose/towels available so you don't leave pink and blue footprints through the house.

For a family with small children like my own, a big family vacation in the summer isn't always an option. But just because your summer entertainment budget is small doesn't mean you and your kids can't have lots of fun this summer.

Here are ten ideas to get you started on lots of fun this summer - on a budget.

1) Water + Kids = Lots of Fun

Put everyone in bathing suits and turn on the sprinklers. Fill the plastic pool that's been lying around the garage all year. Get some inexpensive water guns at the dollar store and fill up some water balloons. Believe me, your kids won't need any further instructions. Just keep plenty of towels around to dry off afterwards.

2) Your Child on Paper

Get a large sheet of packing paper, or use some leftover wallpaper. Any big sheet of paper will do. Ask your child to lay on his or her back on the paper and use a pen or pencil to draw the outline around him or her. Let your child paint features, clothes etc. When the paint dries, cut the shape out and hang this life-size picture of your child up.

3) Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk

Use the recipe found at http://www.kinderinfo.com/crafts/sidewalk-chalk.htm to make your own sidewalk chalk. Use it to let the kids turn the driveway into a piece of art, or and use it to play hopscotch.

4) Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Do you have a baseball team in town? It doesn't have to be a major league team. In fact tickets will be a lot cheaper if it isn't. Take the kids out to a minor league game or even watch your high school team play.

5) Backyard Camping Trip

Don't have time to take the kids on a camping trip this year? Just camp out in the backyard or even in your living room. 6) Take the Kids to Work

Have your kids been curious what Mom or Dad do all day at work? Take them with you for a day or even just a few hours before they have to go back to school. Of course you may want to check with your employer first. If he doesn't like the idea of having a child hang out in the office all day, ask if it would be ok for someone to bring your child in for an hour or two. Get your child involved while he or she is visiting with you. Ask him or her to help you with some of your everyday tasks.

7) Game Night / Movie Night

Dig out some of the board games that have been sitting in the closet for ages and play games for a few hours. You can even share some games that you enjoyed playing as a child.

Movie Night is another great way for the entire family to spend the evening together. Rent a family movie, make some popcorn and have everyone watch the movie together.

8) Lemonade Stand

Encourage your children to open a lemonade stand. They'll be busy all day making posters, and lemonade of course, setting up the table and selling the lemonade. This is also a great time to work in some math practice by working with them to figure out the cost of each glass of lemonade and how much they need to sell it for to make a profit.

9) Treasure Hunt

You can keep the kids busy for hours with a fun treasure hunt. The idea is to create a series of clues that the kids will have to follow to get to a little prize in the end. You can draw the item where the next clue is hidden on a note card, or give them a written clue. For example, "The next clue is hidden under a chair in the house". Put another clue under one of the chairs saying that the next clue can be found hanging in a tree in the yard. This can be as simple or as elaborate as you'd like.

10) End of Summer Party

Invite the kids your child has been playing with all summer for an End of Summer Party. You may want to have their parents over as well, to give you a chance to get to know each other. This doesn't have to be fancy, just ask everyone to come over and grill some hotdogs in the backyard.
